Sowing and Reaping 2 Corinthians 9: 9-11

As it is written, He [the benevolent person] scatters abroad; He gives to the poor; His deeds of justice and goodness and kindness and benevolence will go on and endure forever!

10 And [God] Who provides seed for the sower and bread for eating will also provide and multiply your [resources for] sowing and increase the fruits of your righteousness [[e]which manifests itself in active goodness, kindness, and charity] .

11 Thus you will be enriched in all things and in every way, so that you can be generous, and [your generosity as it is] administered by us will bring forth thanksgiving to God.

Vs 9: Their righteousness endures forever. Who? Those who have scattered freely their gifts to the poor.

Paul quoted Psalm 112: 9. Psalm 112 speaks of the benefits of giving and righteousness. It also emphasizes the fact that giving is closely related to righteousness. Verse 9 speaks of people who freely give to the poor. The words used are so apt. They have freely scattered their gifts to the poor…‘’ Then, it speaks of the benefit of freely giving to the poor. What is the benefit of freely giving to the poor? Their righteousness endures forever.

Their righteousness endures forever. Righteousness is the quality of being morally right or justifiable. It also denotes goodness, virtue, uprightness, decency, integrity, piety, honour, justice amongst many other synonyms.[1] These words do not necessarily all mean the same thing. However, the meaning of the words ‘Their righteousness endures forever’ is that giving to the poor continually makes you righteous in Awesome JEHOVAH’s Eyes.

This is reinforced by several Scriptures that point to the fact that a very important part of righteousness is giving to the needy. The second most important Commandment in the world is: Love your neighbour as much you love yourself (Mark 12: 31).  Moreover, he who lends to the poor lends to Awesome JEHOVAH. And GOD will surely pay him back (bountifully of course!) (Proverbs 19: 17). Thus, the fastest way to touch GOD’s Awesome Heart is by giving. You must give GOD tithes and offerings (Malachi 3: 10). You must give to the needy. With the same measure you give to others, you shall receive (Luke 6: 38). This is how serious GOD is about giving.

Prayer: HOLY SPIRIT, help me to please GOD by giving. Help me to lead a righteous giving lifestyle in JESUS’ Name. Amen.

Vs 10: JEHOVAH who supplies seed to the sower and bread for food will also supply and increase your store of seed and enlarge the harvest of your righteousness.

GOD supplies seed to the sower. Seeds are sown to reap an harvest. Thus, among the bread GOD has given us for food is the seed we must sow to reap a good harvest. We are not blessed so that we may eat our blessings alone. We are blessed so that we can reach out to others and be a blessing to them. Awesome JESUS said that the poor will always be in the Church (John 12: 8). HE said this to emphasise the fact that we have a duty to take care of the needy around us. Thus, when GOD blesses us, and we sow into the lives of others, HE pays us back because we lend to HIM (Proverbs 19: 17), and as reach out to others, we reach out to JESUS’ Awesome Heart. We do it for HIM (Matthew 25: 40). As we give, it shall be given unto us with the same measure we use (Luke 6: 38).

Remember: GOD’s Blessings are not for you alone. GOD blesses you because HE trusts you and thinks you are a good labourer in the Kingdom. GOD is looking for faithful labourers (Matthew 9: 38; Luke 10: 2). Thus, GOD entrusts people with wealth. HE does not give you wealth. HE makes you a custodian of wealth. Remember, all the silver and gold are HIS (Haggai 2: 8). Thus, GOD puts wealth in your custody, so that you can distribute to the needy. Therefore, your money or wealth is not for you or your children to spend alone.

If GOD blesses you and you are selfish with your blessings, HE will take them away from you. Remember the rich fool! GOD blessed him and he did not think of giving or sowing love seeds to anyone. He wanted all the food for himself. What did GOD do? HE took the man away that same night. And he sure didn’t make Heaven. Thus, GOD watches you to see if you will take your responsibilities seriously. Another story is that of the man who did not use the talent GOD gave him well. Instead, he hid it in the ground. What did GOD do? HE ordered the man be cast into hell. Thus, let us start taking our Christian duties to GOD and our neighbors through giving seriously, and SEE GOD BLESS US EVEN MORE.

Have you ever taught of Mark 4: 25?

‘Whoever has will be given more; whoever does not have, even what they have will be taken from them’

The person who is blessed will have more blessings. Why? Because he gives to the needy. Now, there is someone who does not have much. He wrongly thinks that he should not give because he does not have more. Thus, the spiritual rules of sowing and reaping will never apply to him because he does not give. Thus, he cannot receive more. He will remain where he is until he changes. After-all, YOU CAN’T REAP IF YOU DON’T SOW! After a while, even what he has will be taken from him. When he needs help, he gets none! You see the irony?

Obviously, this person who does not have much does not remember that giving, no matter how little, touches GOD’s Awesome Heart. The widow gave only one coin- ALL she had. Yet, GOD appreciated it despite the fact that other rich people gave far more than her (Mark 12: 44). Thus, mark my words: THE POVERTY OF THE POOR IS THEIR FAULT.

Vs 11: the more we give, the more we are blessed. JESUS said it is more blessed to give than to receive (Acts 20:35). Thus, we shall be enriched in every way so that we can always be generous on every occasion there is to give. Through our generosity, people can give thanks to GOD.

When we give, we are blessed. When we give to the poor, GOD pays us back because we lend to HIM (Proverbs 19: 17). The more we give, the more we receive. With the same measure we use in giving to people, people will give to us in that same measure (Luke 6: 38). GOD loves a giver, and will always bless givers. When GOD ‘pays’ you back for your generosity, HE enriches you. HE obviously gives you more than enough. Why? So that you can give more than your usual, at every available opportunity to give. This is so that people can Glorify GOD because of your good works on earth (Mathew 5: 16), and give thanks to HIM.
