Good day People of GOD.
Today we will be looking at 1 Samuel 15: 23, where Samuel tells Saul that the sins of disobedience and stubbornness are like witchcraft and idolatry, respectively.
Brief recap: in verse 22, Samuel scolds Saul for disobeying GOD, by sparing Agag, the King of the Amalekites, and some animals whom GOD had instructed him to kill.
For rebellion is like the sin of divination, and arrogance like the evil of idolatry. Because you have rejected the word of the LORD, he has rejected you as king (NIV).
For rebellion is as the sin of witchcraft, and stubbornness is as iniquity and idolatry. Because thou hast rejected the word of the LORD, he hath also rejected thee from being king (KJV).
For rebellion is as [serious as] the sin of divination (fortune-telling), and disobedience is as [serious as] false religion and idolatry. Because you have rejected the word of the Lord, He also has rejected you as king (AMP).
Today, we will be looking at verse 23 of 1 Samuel, where Samuel tells Saul that rebellion is as the sin of witchcraft, and stubbornness is as the sin of idolatry.
The two gravest sins in the Bible are witchcraft and idolatry. In Exodus 22: 18, GOD commands the Israelites, ‘Thou shalt not suffer a witch to live (KJV)’. In Exodus 20: 5, GOD says, ‘Thou shalt not bow down thyself to them, nor serve them: for I the LORD thy God am a jealous God, visiting the iniquity of the fathers upon the children unto the third and fourth generation of them that hate me… (KJV)’.
In Bible times, witches were pariahs in society, and most witches and people suspected to be witches, were burnt at the stake. Today, witches are no longer burnt at the stake, but witchcraft is not looked upon kindly. At my church, we pray against witchcraft and witches and command them to die, in the Name of JESUS. Yet, Samuel compares the sins of disobedience and stubbornness to witchcraft and idolatry respectively. This Scripture used to send chills down my spine when I was younger.
My pastor and my mum always say that sin is sin, no matter how ‘small’. When I was a ‘baby Christian’, I used to think that telling ‘small’ lies by omission, is not such a grave sin, and I could probably get away with it. But now, I know better. Sin is sin, no matter how ‘small’ it seems. This Scripture clearly confirms that. GOD regards disobedience and stubbornness as grave/serious sins.
GOD has good reasons to hate disobedience so. Man disobeyed GOD, ate forbidden fruit, and got kicked out of the Garden of Eden. He upset GOD’s Entire Plan of man’s dominance on earth, and his close relationship with GOD. GOD initially created man so that HE can have a close relationship with man (Genesis 1: 26-28). Yet, man spoiled the Plan because of disobedience. For several millennia after, man was in bondage until JESUS died for him.
We as Christians are running a race to fulfill destiny on earth and ultimately get the prize- make Heaven (1 Corinthians 9: 24). This race we can only run by the Grace of GOD. Many people are independent-minded or opinionated (like I am). Other people are gentle, and tend to be more acquiescing than others. GOD gave us different personalities for a reason. However, no matter your nature, ask GOD for the Grace to be obedient and willing to obey HIS Word. There is no obedience without willingness or cheerfulness, and promptness.
In addition, one of the lessons I have learnt as a Christian is that GOD only instructs or leads you depending on your willingness to obey. I started hearing from GOD more, when I became more willing to obey. I stopped questioning GOD’s Motives or the feasibility or sensibility of what GOD instructs me to do or refrain from doing. It used to be awkward at first, because I could be about to do something, and the HOLY SPIRIT tells me not to do it. I know that it is GOD speaking because I have no peace in my heart about that subject, yet, I used to be hesitant, wondering if I heard right or not. After making several mistakes that were really costly, I learnt to hear GOD and obey HIM without reluctance. It is something you have to develop. For me, I had to pray for the Grace to be obedient and malleable in GOD’s Hands. I can say GOD answered my prayer, and is still molding me for HIS Purpose on earth.
Finally, it pays to be obedient. As you lay your bed, so shall you lie on it. And GOD is not mocked, whatever you sow, you shall reap (Galatians 6: 7). You sow obedience, you shall reap life. There is something I tell people: if I always consult or hear, and obey the HOLY SPIRIT on every issue of my life, my error margin will be 0.0001% or nil. I reflect on my life regularly, and always notice that some of the mistakes I made would have been avoided if I had listened to that ‘Gentle’ Voice in my heart.
May the LORD bless the study of HIS Awesome Word in JESUS’ Name!
