2 PETER 1: 7 FOR THIS VERY REASON, MAKE EVERY EFFORT TO ADD TO… GODLINESS, MUTUAL AFFECTION; AND TO MUTUAL AFFECTION, LOVE.

Welcome/Bienvenue/Shalom/Ekabo

Good day People of GOD.

Today we will be looking at 2 Peter 1: 7 where Peter urges us to add mutual affection and love to Godliness. Therefore, your Godliness is incomplete without Love.

and to godliness, mutual affection; and to mutual affection, love (NIV).

And to godliness brotherly kindness; and to brotherly kindness charity (KJV).

and in your godliness, brotherly affection, and in your brotherly affection, [develop Christian] love [that is, learn to unselfishly seek the best for others and to do things for their benefit] (AMP).

In verses 5 and 6 of 2 Peter 1, Peter admonishes us that in exercising our faith with all diligence, we should add virtue to faith, add knowledge to virtue, add self-control to knowledge, add steadfastness to self-control, and to add Godliness to steadfastness. These character traits are part of the ‘skill-set’ we need to build our spiritual lives with fear and trembling.

Peter does not stop there however. He goes on to say in verse 7, that in addition to Godliness, you should add brotherly affection/mutual affection, and in addition, brotherly affection, you should have love. Mutual/brotherly affection can be a synonym for love.

GOD is Love (1 John 4: 8). Thus, you cannot claim to know GOD is you don’t love. The two greatest commandments are as follows:

37Jesus replied: “ ‘Love the Lord your God with all your heart and with all your soul and with all your mind.’c 38This is the first and greatest commandment. 39And the second is like it: ‘Love your neighbor as yourself.’d 40All the Law and the Prophets hang on these two commandments (Matthew 22: 38-39 NIV).”

Your Godliness is not complete without loving GOD with the whole of your body, heart, and soul, and loving your neighbour as much as you love yourself. This is why JESUS even remarked that, ’All the Law and the Prophets hang on these two commandments’ in Matthew 22: 40 (NIV). JESUS was essentially saying that being religious alone is not the way to serve GOD. HE was saying this in the presence of the Pharisees (verse 41) who were very religious, but merciless.

The two greatest commandments are self-explanatory, but they are easier said than done. In the Church of today, many so-called Christians have forgotten the first purpose of going to Church to love GOD, and serve HIS People. Moreover, many ‘Christians’ have forgotten that the key to making Heaven is showing love to GOD’s People in the Church. They have forgotten Matthew 25: 34-36, where JESUS says the criteria for making Heaven is this:

34“Then the King will say to those on his right, ‘Come, you who are blessed by my Father; take your inheritance, the kingdom prepared for you since the creation of the world. 35For I was hungry and you gave me something to eat, I was thirsty and you gave me something to drink, I was a stranger and you invited me in, 36I needed clothes and you clothed me, I was sick and you looked after me, I was in prison and you came to visit me (NIV).’

Awesome JESUS says the following in Matthew 7: 21-23:

21“Not everyone who says to me, ‘Lord, Lord,’ will enter the kingdom of heaven, but only the one who does the will of my Father who is in heaven. 22Many will say to me on that day, ‘Lord, Lord, did we not prophesy in your name and in your name drive out demons and in your name perform many miracles?’ 23Then I will tell them plainly, ‘I never knew you. Away from me, you evildoers (NIV)!

Many people may think that their going to church and relentlessly engaging in church activities (just to be seen) is enough to get them to Heaven. Getting to Heaven in the end should be the ultimate goal of every Christian. Yet, they neglect the needy, the poor in the Church. And when another brother needs a hand, they either want to get paid for assisting, or do not bother to assist at all or do not even care about assisting someone else in need. And that is where they miss it.

GOD does not care much about tithes and offerings. After all, all the cattle ona  thousand hills belong to HIM (Psalm 50: 10). If GOD were hungry (and HE’s not) you would not even know. Moreover, GOD does not care much about your Kingdom Service. After all, engaging in Kingdom service is largely for your benefit, not HIS (Matthew 6: 33). And if you don’t raise your voice to praise Him or engage in Kingdom service, HE will replace you with stones (Luke 19: 40).

The point: your Godliness is not complete without love. And until you obey the two commandments of love, GOD is not interested in your service or you money.

May GOD give you the Grace to love HIM above all, and love your  neighbour as much as you love yourself. My name is Love. But, I still pray for HIS Grace. I am not perfect, and I don’t pretend to be. My favourite quote of mine is: ‘I am a piece of art GOD is still working on, and the beautiful result will be unveiled in eternity.’ Ifeoluwa Oluyeju (Love). I still pray to GOD to help me love HIM above all else with all my body, heart, soul, mind, destiny, EVERYTHING, and to love my neighbours and family as much as I love myself. ‘I have come to realise I did not come to the world for me; I came for others.’ Ifeoluwa Oluyeju (Love)

2 PETER 1: 6 FOR THIS VERY REASON, MAKE EVERY EFFORT TO… KNOWLEDGE, SELF-CONTROL…

download (1).jpg

Welcome/Bienvenue/Shalom/Ekabo

Good day People of GOD.

Today we will be looking at 2 Peter 1: 6, where Peter admonishes us to add self-control to our knowledge, and persevere in exercising self-restraint when appropriate and to be Godly. These are the next set of traits necessary to build your spiritual life on earth.

and to knowledge, self-control; and to self-control, perseverance; and to perseverance, godliness (NIV);

And to knowledge temperance; and to temperance patience; and to patience godliness (KJV);

and in your knowledge, self-control, and in yourself-control, steadfastness, and in yoursteadfastness, godliness (AMP);

Previously, Peter admonished us to add virtue to our faith, and add knowledge to our virtue. And it has been established that the wisdom plays a major role in building your spiritual life.

However, Peter does not stop there. In verse 6, he says that your knowledge is not complete without self-control or temperance. So, it is not enough to have knowledge or wisdom; you must add self-control to the mix too.

At church, when we are taught about wisdom, our pastor defines wisdom as the ‘application of knowledge’. It is not enough to have that knowledge, but you must know how to apply it and actually apply it. If you don’t apply self-control to the knowledge you have, you could become very proud and incorrigible, and that will ultimately lead to your destruction. Knowledge without self-control or temperance could kill.

Take Solomon for instance. He is reputed to be the wisest man that crossed the face of the earth. Yet, his life ended as a mess, and the kingdom was wrested from his family. He was wise, but had 700 wives of royal birth and 300 concubines, who led him away from GOD (1 Kings 11: 3). The authors of the Bible would not have mentioned this if it is not true. A man that was glorified at some point in the life, fell from grace to grass- yet it was mentioned he was the wisest man (1 Kings 4: 29-34). The only other man who has walked the face of the earth, and had greater wisdom is Awesome JESUS CHRIST.

The point I am bringing out here is that knowledge or wisdom can be useless or even prove destructive without self-control or –restraint. Even JESUS exercised restraint in some situations where another person in HIS Shoes would have just gone along with the crowd. Take for instance when the Israelites wanted to make HIM king. HE had just fed 5000 men, apart from women and children- roughly 12 000 people in all. HE realised the Israelites wanted to come and make HIM king by force, and withdrew again to a mountain by HIMSELF.  Obviously, that must have looked attractive. One may think it may have furthered GOD’s Plan of Reconciliation with mankind along, without JESUS having to die. But, Awesome and Merciful JESUS knew that the Father’s Plan for HIM was different, and HE had to die so that mankind can be reconciled to GOD. So, HE exercised restraint, and refused the option of being made king at that time. Indeed, JESUS ran away from all ‘appearance of evil’ (1 Thessalonians 5: 22). Today, HE sits at the Right Hand of Awesome GOD the Father, and everything is perfect. If JESUS had allowed the people to make HIM king then, GOD’s Plan would have been destroyed. We all should learn from this.

Another time when Awesome JESUS exercised self-control was when HE was about to be arrested, and Peter in HIS defense, cut off the ear of the High Priest’s servant. JESUS immediately rebuked him and reminded him that HE had to die as GOD intended (John 18: 10-12). At another time, JESUS was being tortured, and of course, as GOD the Son, HE could call on HIS Father who would send at least 12 legions of Angels to come down and defend HIM, and kill all those people. Yet, HE restrained from doing so because HE knew it was not part of GOD’s Plan (Matthew 26: 53-54).

Finally, Peter says add to self-control, steadfastness. In other words, be persistent, committed, and dedicated towards exercising self-control and building your spiritual life. And while being steadfast in GOD, be Godly. Pray to the HOLY SPIRIT to empower you with the Fear of GOD (Isaiah 11: 2), and to help you as you endeavour and work hard at being Godly. It is not easy being Godly in the world we live in now, with so much corruption, violence, and tolerance of things that are contrary to the Word of GOD. Yet, by the HOLY SPIRIT, all things are possible (Mark 19: 26).

2 PETER 1: 5 FOR THIS VERY REASON, MAKE EVERY EFFORT TO ADD TO YOUR FAITH GOODNESS; AND TO GOODNESS, KNOWLEDGE

untitled.png

Welcome/Bienvenue/Shalom/Ekabo

Good day People of GOD. Happy New Week. May you be richly blessed in all you do this week, as GOD leadsyou by your right hand in JESUS’ Name!

In three days we will be looking at 2 Peter 1: 5-7, where Peter mentions character traits we need to build our faith and spiritual lives. However, we will look at verse 5 today.

FOR THIS VERY REASON, MAKE EVERY EFFORT TO ADD TO YOUR FAITH GOODNESS; AND TO GOODNESS, KNOWLEDGE (KJV);

And beside this, giving all diligence, add to your faith virtue; and to virtue knowledge (KJV);

For this very reason, applying your diligence [to the divine promises, make every effort] in [exercising] your faith to, develop moral excellence, and in moral excellence, knowledge (insight, understanding) (AMP);

There are some character traits you need to ‘work out your salvation with fear and trembling (Philippians 2: 12)’. Peter listed them in verses 5-7 of 1 Peter 2.

The first trait you need is diligence. In other words, you need to make every effort in exercising your faith. Thus, you can assume that diligence is the basis of your salvation. He goes on to say that in addition to faith (so faith is just not enough), you should develop virtue (NIV); goodness (KJV); moral excellence (AMP). Faith, on its own, without works is dead (James 2: 17). And you cannot claim to believe and trust in GOD, when you don’t obey HIS Basic Precepts. Thus, developing blamelessness or moral excellence is crucial to maintain your salvation.

However, working hard at building your faith and developing moral excellence is not enough. You must add knowledge, insight, understanding or wisdom (all synonyms of knowledge) to the mix. Why is this important? GOD lamented HIS People are destroyed for lack of knowledge (Hosea 4: 6)! Moreover, zeal without knowledge is tantamount to foolishness (a recent experience has proven this to be true). It is dangerous to have zeal without knowledge, and a man who hasteth with his feet sinneth (Proverbs 19:2 see NET Bible version). The role of wisdom in the life of a man is so important James says that if you lack wisdom, ask GOD in faith, and HE will five you without reserve (James 1: 5). Besides, Awesome HOLY SPIRIT is the Spirit of Divine Wisdom (Isaiah 11: 2), and JESUS went to Heaven so that HE can send the HOLY SPIRIT to us (John 16: 7).

31days_Day2.jpg

Finally, only you have the duty to build your faith. There are certain things nobody can do for you. For example, no matter how much you love your wife, if you are a man, you cannot give birth to a child on her behalf. No matter how much you want to relieve your spouse, you can’t pee or poop on their behalf. The point: NOBOSY CAN BUILD YOUR FAITH FOR YOU. The responsibility to build your spiritual life with all diligence lies with only you. Not your spouse, pastor, or parent or child or whoever. There is a famous Yoruba saying, ‘Igbagbo baba, ko gbo mo la’. It literally means the faith of the father does not save the child.

In addition, endeavour to live a holy life according to GOD’s Standards. You are not perfect and you don’t have to pretend to be. Nobody can live a holy life without the Help of the HOLY SPIRIT who imparts the Spirit of the Fear of GOD in us (Isaiah 11: 2). Ask GOD for Wisdom, and HE will lead and guide you in all things (Psalm 32: 8). May you be richly blessed in all things. Amen.
