Good day People of GOD.

Today we will be looking at 1 Samuel 18: 25-27 where David killed 200 Philistine men, and produced their foreskins as dowry for Michal, Saul’s daughter in marriage. We also look at the consequences afterwards.

25 Saul replied, “Say to David, ‘The king wants no other price for the bride than a hundred Philistine foreskins, to take revenge on his enemies.’” Saul’s plan was to have David fall by the hands of the Philistines.

26 When the attendants told David these things, he was pleased to become the king’s son-in-law. So before the allotted time elapsed, 27 David took his men with him and went out and killed two hundred Philistines and brought back their foreskins. They counted out the full number to the king so that David might become the king’s son-in-law. Then Saul gave him his daughter Michal in marriage (NIV).

If the foundations be destroyed, what can the righteous do (Psalm 11: 3 KJV)?

David asked for the hand of Michal, Saul’s daughter, in marriage. Saul’s response? ‘The king wants no other price for the bride than a hundred Philistine foreskins, to take revenge on his enemies’. What does David do? He goes and kills 200 Philistine men, cut off their foreskins, and gives them to Saul in order to marry one woman- Michal. Now listen, this is not a chivalrous act or something really cool. We are going to look at the implications of this act, and the later repercussions in the marriage of David and Michal.

David and Michal’s marriage was built upon the death of 200 innocent Philistine men, and the violation of their penises/private parts- reproductive organs. This was the foundation of that marriage. What does the Bible say about foundations? ‘If the foundations be destroyed, what can the righteous do (Psalm 11: 3 KJV)?.’ This is a very powerful Scripture, because it is the basis of some very powerful spiritual truths. I plead with you to keep an open mind, and let GOD speak to you.

The failure or success of anything and everything in life depends on its foundation. Even JESUS alludes to this when HE says:

48He is like a man building a house, who dug down deep and laid his foundation on the rock. When the flood came, the torrent crashed against that house but could not shake it, because it was well built. 49But the one who hears My words and does not act on them is like a man who built his house on ground without a foundation. The torrent crashed against that house, and immediately it collapsed — and great” was its destruction (Luke 6: 49 NIV).

Once the foundation of anything or venture is faulty, there is bound to be problems or grave repercussions. The foundation of whatever you lay your hands upon to do is very important. For instance, if you came into wealth by crookedness or wickedness, that wealth cannot last. If you and your spouse built your marriage and life together based on immorality, there is bound to be problems unless you ask GOD for Mercy. If you achieved academic success by cheating at exams or bribing lecturers, if you are not discovered, one day you will be exposed. Everything and every being has a foundation, and this spiritual truth will help in avoiding many life problems. And every bad and faulty foundation always backfires and even carries generational consequences or curses. GOD is not mocked; whatever you sow, you will reap (Galatians 6: 7).

Do good and Dont ever stop doing good even if its not appreciated at that time

Back to David and Michal’s story: these two eventually got married. But, what consequences resulted from the unusual foreskin dowry David paid to get Michal? In 2 Samuel 6, the Ark of the LORD had been with Obed-Edom, as a result of which GOD blessed him and all that he had (verse 12). So, David heard GOD was blessing Obed-Edom and went to reclaim the Ark and brought it to the City of David with great rejoicing. He sacrificed to GOD, and was dancing half naked before GOD, while the other Israelites were dancing and praising GOD. As the Ark was entering the City of David, Michal watched from a window. She despised him in her heart (verse 16), and scolded David for praising GOD as he did- half-naked- in front of his subjects (verse 20). As a result, Michal had no children, and she is the only woman recorded barren in the Bible (verse 23). What could have moved Michal to behave in such a despicable manner? One cannot exactly say, but truly, what goes around comes around. 200 Philistine men had been killed for their reproductive organs- foreskins- so that she could marry David. And she could not reproduce and give David any children, so her reproductive organs were rendered useless. Saul, her father, had asked for 100 foreskins- David brought double- so that David could be killed. Look at how that evil plan backfired, and affected Michal who was initially not part of the marriage negotiation.

What about David who committed the deed? Well, when he asked GOD for the privilege to build HIS Holy temple, GOD said ‘You have shed much blood and have fought many wars. You are not to build a house for my Name, because you have shed much blood on the earth in my sight (1 Chronicles 22: 8).’ Even though GOD had said David was a man after his heart (1 Samuel 13: 14), GOD could not let him touch HIS Temple, because he had shed too much innocent blood. Look at the mistakes David made towards the end of his life, that resulted in his son’s death, son’s betrayal, sickness, many troubles and eventual early death- it is obvious that GOD does not condone sin, like the shedding of innocent blood, no matter who you are. The Bible says:

The LORD is slow to anger, abounding in love and forgiving sin and rebellion. Yet he does not leave the guilty unpunished; he punishes the children for the sin of the parents to the third and fourth generation (Numbers 14: 18 NIV).’

One last point I want to make. This may be controversial, but it is true. I got this from the HOLY SPIRIT, as I was studying the Word. When I was growing up, my parents of course, always warned my siblings and I that sex before marriage is wrong, it is a sin, and it destroys destinies. My parents used to cite so many examples of the lives of people we knew, whose destinies were altered because they had sex before marriage. For example, this one lady was a math genius who would have gone places with her knowledge. But, she was promiscuous, got pregnant outside wedlock, and there was nobody else to take care of her baby. She had to leave school, get a menial job to survive, and has not been heard from since. I was a very inquisitive child, and I used to ask for references in the Bible, where the Bible expressly prohibited premarital sex or fornication. Then, I found it. It was funny because I had known that chapter quite well, but seemed to miss that verse. 1 Corinthians 6: 9 says,

Or do you not know that the unrighteous will not inherit the kingdom of God? Do not be deceived; neither fornicators, nor idolaters, nor adulterers, nor[a]effeminate, nor homosexuals (NASB)

Then, the HOLY SPIRIT ministered this to me as well, and I thought I would share it with you. This applies for both men and women alike (when I was younger I wondered why parents and society were harder on girls about the sex issue, than boys). Your sexual foundation is very important, whether you are a man or a woman. Specifically, the deflowering of a virgin woman involves blood. And blood has life in it, and this is why Jews were strictly forbidden from drinking blood (Leviticus 17: 10-12). Be careful with the person you allow to deflower you. This is because at the point you are deflowered, a blood covenant or spiritual blood relationship is created between you and that man. This is why the Bible says, ‘That is why a man leaves his father and mother and is united to his wife, and they become one flesh (Genesis 2: 24 NIV)’. It is not just actual penetration that is referred to here; it is the fact that spiritually, the man and the woman are regarded as one. This is why young women are advised to wait for marriage before having sex. However, if you have already made mistakes, there is hope because you can ask GOD for Mercy.

Finally, if you still have parents, watch the way you treat them. It is the way you treat your parents that your children will treat you. This is very very important, so much that GOD made the commandment on honouring parents the first commandment with a promise, among the Ten commandments (Exodus 20: 12). I am also speaking to myself here. May GOD help we who have parents, to honour and obey them. Amen.

There I have said it. The foundation of everything is important. Before doing anything, think about the possible consequences in the physical and spiritual realm, and decide if that thing is really worth.

May the LORD bless the study of HIS Awesome Word in JESUS’ Name!
